Travel Cabo San Lucas

Traveling to Cabo San Lucas Mexico in August, staying at Riu Santa Fe??
Okay…I have NEVER been to Cabo and always wanted to go but I have been reading some reviews on the resort and now I am a bit worried…first off…the water?? I am staying at a resort and I have heard that neither the Rui Palace or the Santa Fe have water filtration systems??? Is this true? Will the drinks be okay to drink since most of them have ice in them? Also, what is the weather like in August there? What should I expect? We plan on going out on the town during the day and at night? Any places we should definately go? I am excited to get out on the town and possibly run into a celebrity! =0) Anyway, my husband also wants to go deep sea fishing. Any advice on this as well? Thank you so much for all your help! Any advice is appreciated. THANKS!
We’ve always drank bottled water there in Cabo. The resorts use filtered water for their ice and should be o.k. We’ve never had a problem.
Don’t know how much time you have there but we always rent a small VW semi-convertible and head north along the coast route, through the mountains, to La Paz, the capitol. Walk along the maelcon, have lunch and return via the Pacific side through Todas Santos. Another day we’ll go to Todas Santos and have a great lunch at the restaurant across from The Hotel California. When you leave they’ll give you a felt tip pen to sign your name where ever there’s room on the walls, floor, chairs, bar, what ever. On the return trip, take some of the small rutted dirt roads towards the beach. Absolutely deserted, no one for miles, and beautful. Don’t swim though as the undertow is bad.
Another day we go towards the airport and turn into San Jose de Cabo…quieter, laid back, good shopping, nice to walk around, good restaurants.
Fun can be had in the evenings at Gigglin’ Marlin and Squid Row. Have dinner at the corner restaurant by the marina…mariachis, sailboats, fishing boats. Take a dinner cruise on the ship that has a candlelit table, 5 course dinner, and a floor show. Reasonable and great evening.
Or for fun, take one of the two large catamarans for a sunset cruise around the arch, drinks and simple foods served.
Don’t do anything you’re not certified or licensed or trained for…scuba, for example.
Fishing can be had at several boats in the marina but for a better time, in my opinion, drive just north of San Jose past the new developement (another marina there also) and just past there a few miles along the coast you’ll run across several panga fishermen that’ll take you out all day. They are less expensive. They can bring drinks and sandwiches. Bring plenty of bottled water with you. And sunscreen.
August will be extremely hot and humid….which is one reason we drive up the coast on another day and visit all the small beach side pueblos and drive along the beach. Sea of Cortez side is much better for surfing, swimming, snorkle stuff. Santa Marina Bay is almost halfway to San Jose and is a nice afternoon swim and snorkle spot.
I believe it’s Maria’s or Casa Maria’s restaurant off the strip and up a bit that is very nice restaurant. Mariachi’s, good food and drinks….more refined than some of the cantinas downtown although the two I mentioned are fun, fun, fun…
If you do rent a car, be sure the gas attendant makes the dials go to zero on the pump before pumping gas. Otherwise the previous customers gas amount will just be included in your amount and nothing will change their minds even if the vehicle couldn’t possibly hold that much gas.
Cabo Wabo is o.k. for the younger, loud LOUD music…Planet Hollywood was typical tourist trap…lousey food and high prices.
Good shopping down town…Soriana and Costco have just about anything you want to bring back home or to the resort for drinks, sandwiches, etc for your little trips around Baja.
You’ve got about 6 to 8 weeks so I’d certainly get on the internet and start learning some basic Spanish. It’s not all that difficult and it’s nice when you speak their language. A simple Gracias is welcomed as is Como esta?
Remember…it’s going to be hot and humid……..take bottled drinking water with you so you don’t get heatstroke or dehydrate.
Have fun……
