When should I buy airfare??

I am going to Cabo San Lucas (from West Palm Beach, FL/Miami area) in October and am trying to find the best airfare. All last week the fares were $427 RT, then suddenly they went up $100 yesterday, and another $50 today.. should I wait until they go back down, or buy now (at around $600 a ticket) incase they keep increasing? Naturally, I will be extremely mad if I buy today and then theyre back to $400 in a few days, but also so if I wait and they go up and up and up… any ideas as to the best chance? Or any ideas how to gage the market (farecast.com doesnt have these cities).. Thanks.

Generally speaking you will usually get the best airfare when you buy far in advance and spend at least a week in your destination city. Also booking mid week (Tues., Weds, Thursday) is also less expensive. I would think that booking now would get you a good airfare. $400 RT to Cabo seems like a pretty good deal — if you see prices that low again you should probably book the flight.

The spike you saw in price could have been artificial — due to something like gas prices and may come back down (in fact just found a Delta flight from Ft Lauderdale for $427+ fees). Look daily and try different sites, not all Airlines are affiliated with all sites. Sidestep, Trip Advisor, Orbitz for example. If you sign up at CheapTickets.com, they’ll send you alerts when the airfare drops.

If you’re a risk taker you could wait until just before your trip. Many airlines who haven’t sold all the seats on a plane will typically cut rates to fill them up.

Alternatively you could check with a travel agent, they might be able to help gage the market and give you insight into when fares will rise or drop.
